Lime is more effective when it is applied to the soil surface and incorporated into the topsoil by cultivation. Because lime can only be applied to the soil surface in no-till, much larger amounts of lime need to be applied for the liming to be effective. Only then will alkali from the surface-applied lime move into soil to ameliorate soil acidity in both the topsoil and subsoil. It is likely to be only economically feasible to apply several smaller applications of lime over several years in no-till, so a long-term liming strategy is required. |
