Post Seeding Field Walk Cunderdin July 14 2010

On July 14th 2010 WANTFA will be  holding a Post seeding Field Walk (2010 Details and Map) at the WANTFA Centre for Stubble Retention Research located at Cunderdin. This Field Walk gives growers and researchers an early look at the trials and research being conducted at the site for the season.  There is a chance to look at early performance and follow the progression of the trials at the WANTFA Spring Field Day held  on September,22 2010 and agronomists can preview trials so they can encourage their clients to attend the major field day.

This year's Field walk will be held on Wednesday the 14th of July 2010.come join us for Breakfast from 9am sponsered by Dow Agro Sciences a valued WANTFA Industry Partner

WANTFA new site
This year represents a new era for WANTFA in terms of research. After ten years at Meckering, the field site has now found a new home at Cunderdin. With a new site there comes new enthusiasm and a new focus. Two adjacent paddocks make up the ‘Centre for Stubble Retention Research’ (location map) One paddock has come out of a long term pasture and the other a long term wheat phase, offering variations in nutrient status and weed burden.
The GRDC funded site focuses on research trials and demonstrations that address specific barriers to stubble retention.  WANTFA will be undertaking comprehensive measurements to increase current knowledge related to sustainable farming techniques.
Two fundamental research questions being explored are the effect of tillage on weed control and crop vigour. In addition WANTFA will be presenting a range of GM canola trials to explore best management practice and its fit within the rotation.
A few trials in detail
Does soil disturbance at seeding affect ryegrass control from pre-emergent herbicides?
Twelve pre-emergent (IBS) herbicide options will be tested to ascertain their efficacy on ryegrass when incorporated and not incorporated at sowing. The effectiveness of many herbicide options can vary with tillage system because of losses from volatilization, photo-degradation and interception via crop residues making many of these herbicides unsuitable in a low disturbance disc seeding system.
Table 1. Treatments

Factor 1: Herbicide treatment
Factor 2: Incorporation method
1.     Nil (no herbicide application)
1.     Knife point press wheel @ 7 km/hr
2.     Trifluralin 1.5L/ha
2.     Triple disc 4km/hr
3.     Trifluralin 4L/ha

10.   Duet 2.3L/ha

11.   Boxer Gold 2.5L/ha

12.   Sukura 118 g/ha

What water volume, droplet spectrum, trajectory and droplet size is best for efficacy of trifluralin in tall stubble?
Seven spray volumes and predominantly two nozzle types will be used to apply trifluralin (2.5 L/ha). The aim of this trial is to determine the impact of water volume and spray quality on pre-seeding weed control. Trifluralin is heavily relied on for pre-emergent annual ryegrass control, particularly in no-till cropping systems; however trifluralin resistance is becoming widespread. This may partially be caused by the herbicide binding to the stubble, rather than reaching the soil surface where it can successfully kill emerging weeds.
Table 2. Treatments

Factor 1: Water volume
Factor 2: Spray quality
1.    30 L/ha
1. Medium
2.    50 L/ha
2. Extremely coarse
3.    70 L/ha

4.    90 L/ha

5.    110 L/ha

6.    130 L/ha

7.    150 L/ha

What is the impact of seeding systems on crop vigour?
This trial is conducted on a sandy clay loam adjacent to the ‘Long-term no-till systems’ site and the ‘Centre for Stubble Retention Research’ grey loamy sand. The aim of the trial is to examine the response of nutrient mineralisation, nutrient uptake and plant biomass to different levels of tillage. This research area is being explored as it has been noted that under some conditions disc seeding seems to result in reduced early crop vigour compared with knife-point seeders.

Factor 1: Incorporation method
Factor 2: Nutrient timing
1.    Tyne, (long knife point)
1. 0N / 0P
2.    Double disc, no tillage

Regional Workshops and Bus Tours

WANTFA will be holding a series of regional workshops across all agricultural areas of WA to highlight specific technical issues and to assist growers to make the move to the no-till farming system. Workshops are targeted at grower groups and offer industry partners the opportunity to directly communicate key messages to targeted audiences of farmers and agribusiness. Workshops will be held both North and South of Western Australia.

Workshops and Bus Tours are scheduled for May and October 2010.

For further information phone Graeme Currie on 0427 223 395.
